For doctors

Urgent referrals

Please call the rooms on 07 3163 7820 and advise our staff of the urgent nature of the referral. We will always ensure the referred patient is seen in a timely manner. Referrals are accepted through Medical Objects or via email to: admin@materhillgastro.com.au.

We also request that your receptionist phones our staff to notify them on urgent referrals. Our doctors are happy to take calls from referring doctors to discuss clinical cases and arrange urgent appointments or hospital admissions. Doctors can be contacted through the Mater Private Hospital switchboard on 07 3163 8111

Direct access

Direct access procedures

In some situations, a patient may be suitable for a direct access colonoscopy or endoscopy without needing an initial consultation with a gastroenterologist. If the patient meets the criteria below, our practice nurse will complete a short phone assessment before scheduling the procedure.

If the criteria are not met, we will arrange a standard consultation first.

  • Age under 74
  • BMI under 35
  • No significant cardiopulmonary or diabetic disease
  • Not taking anticoagulants
  • No previous anaesthetic complications
Direct access

Pre-procedure nurse session

Eligible patients will attend a nurse-led information appointment to go through:

  • Bowel preparation
  • Procedure expectations
  • Safety considerations

If any concerns arise during this discussion, the patient will be booked for a consultation with a gastroenterologist before proceeding.
